After the UK leaves the EU, your residence status in the UK will depend on how long you have lived in the UK and whether you arrive by the end of the planned implementation period on 31 December 2020.

Lordana
- Polish citizen, UK resident for 8 years
- lives in London
- works as a NHS nurse
- holds a permanent residence document
Lordana works as a nurse and has lived in the UK for 8 years. She is eligible for settled status, subject to criminality and security checks. This means she can remain in the UK permanently. She has a valid permanent residence document.
Lordana holds a valid passport and can use her Android smartphone to confirm her identity and nationality using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app, as well as complete the rest of her EU Settlement Scheme application.
Patrik
- German citizen, UK resident for 3 years
- lives in Exeter
- works as a GP for a medical practice
- does not hold a permanent residence document
Patrik works as a GP and has lived in the UK for 3 years. He is eligible for pre-settled status, subject to criminality and security checks. This will give him 5 years’ leave to remain in the UK. He can apply for settled status once he has been continuously resident in the UK for 5 years. This will allow him to remain in the UK permanently.
He holds a valid passport but he doesn’t have his own Android device. However, he can use his wife’s Android smartphone to confirm his identity and nationality using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app. He can complete the rest of the application form either on that Android smartphone or using another device, such as his laptop.
Jenny
- Romanian citizen, arrived in the UK 3 months ago
- lives in Glasgow
- works as a registered social worker
- does not hold a permanent residence document
Jenny works as a social worker and has lived in the UK for the last 3 months. Jenny is eligible for pre-settled status, subject to criminality and security checks. This will give her 5 years’ leave to remain in the UK. She can apply for settled status once she has been continuously resident in the UK for 5 years. This will allow her to remain in the UK permanently.
She arrived in the UK 3 months ago so doesn’t yet have a bank account in the UK or utility bills in her name. She registered with a GP when she arrived in the UK because she attends regular appointments to monitor a long-term health condition.
She can use proof of her current employment or GP appointment letters to prove her residence and eligibility for pre-settled status.
Jenny holds a valid passport and can use her Android smartphone to confirm her identity and nationality using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app, as well as complete the rest of her EU Settlement Scheme application.
Pam
- Brazilian citizen, married to a Belgian citizen
- previously resident for 5 years with her husband, but they have since had some absence from the UK
- lives in Newcastle
- works as a NHS physiotherapist
- does not hold a permanent residence document
Pam works for the NHS as a physiotherapist and she has been married to her Belgian husband since 2007. They both lived together in the UK continuously from 2008 to 2013. Pam and her husband lived in Brazil from 2014 until 2016, when they returned to the UK.
Pam will be eligible for settled status, subject to criminality and security checks. This means she can remain in the UK permanently.
She is eligible because she lived in the UK with her EU citizen husband for 5 years and has not left the UK since then for more than 5 consecutive years. She will need to show evidence of her husband’s identity and nationality, his continuous UK residence from 2008 to 2013 and their marriage in 2007.
She has a biometric residence card which was issued to her in 2016 on the basis that she is the spouse of an EU citizen working in the UK. She must use this biometric residence card to prove her identity and nationality to apply under the scheme during the pilot phase.
She can use her Android smartphone to verify her identity and nationality using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app.
Paul
- French citizen, UK resident from 2012-2013 and 2015 to present
- lives in Liverpool
- works as a receptionist for a care home registered with the Care Quality Commission
- does not hold a permanent residence document
Paul is eligible for pre-settled status if he applies, subject to criminality and security checks. This will give him 5 years’ leave to remain in the UK. He is not eligible for settled status because he did not live in the UK from 2013 to 2015.
Paul holds a valid passport but he doesn’t have his own Android device. He can use a colleague’s Android smartphone to confirm his identity and nationality using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app. He can complete the rest of the application form either on that device or using another device, such as his laptop.
Paul will be eligible to apply for settled status once he has been continuously resident here for 5 years, if he then wants to stay permanently in the UK. He will not need to apply for settled status if he decides to leave the UK before his pre-settled status expires.
Pablo
- Spanish citizen, who arrived in the UK with his parents in 2015
- looked after since 2017 by his local authority, which is participating in the pilot
- aged 17
- does not hold a permanent residence document
The local authority can confirm from its involvement with the family that Pablo arrived in the UK in 2015. Pablo is eligible for pre-settled status, subject to criminality and security checks.
Pablo holds a valid biometric passport and he can confirm his identify and nationality, using the EU Exit: ID Document Check app and complete the rest of his application using his social worker’s Android smartphone.
